Re-defining success by creating customer value and sustainable relationships

With an approximate planned investment of $155 billion in the rail industry over the next 15 years (as per a report published by the Australian Railway Association in March 2021) , and a massive push by the government to develop and grow a sustainable local supply chain, the opportunities that currently exist within the Australian rail sector is promising to say the least.

Systematiq is always on the lookout for opportunities to provide its core competencies to support organizations within the rail market. With the intent of using transferrable resources and skills to smooth resourcing peaks and troughs and achieve critical project deliverables for its clients, Systematiq continues to build a team that delivers to this objective.

Darren Will joined the Systematiq team last year as the project director and business development manager for our rail business. He brings to this role years of experience working in the rail sector across multiple projects and dealing with different areas of rail including light, passenger rail, freight rail within the domains of rolling stock, infrastructure, maintenance, repair, and overhaul.

Throughout his career, Darren has successfully been able to

  • develop key industry and customer knowledge to align capabilities
  • win supply scopes on major contracts and projects of significance and
  • achieve preferred bidder and preferred supplier status with international customers by providing localization of products and manufacturing operations

“I have worked within the rail industry in the capacity of a business development manager for about 12 years, primarily for SME’s supplying rollingstock, capital equipment, and design services.”

Adopting a holistic approach to project delivery

After contracting with Systematiq for a period of time on some fast-paced and really interesting projects, Darren said it was an easy decision to step into his current role as he had already had the opportunity to meet the Systematiq team and develop a good rapport with them.

“The flexibility in the way Systematiq works has been fantastic. The openness of the management has been great and above all, it is a great team to be welcomed into. To add to it, the opportunities I’ve got so far working across different markets, different businesses, and with different technologies, have really been an opportunity to build on my previous experience and add value to various client projects.”

Spread across both the business development and project management areas of the rail business at Systematiq, Darren’s role allows him to provide input at every stage of a client’s project lifecycle to ensure it progresses exactly as per the client’s expectations.

“There is a real understanding of the client’s expectation and value in seeing both sides of the business to ensure that I can better manage the overall project and that the client is happy with the end result.”

Building sustainable client relationships

Leveraging his previous experience of working in automation and manufacturing in the automotive industry and acumen developed by working across multiple business functions such as project management, business development, business unit management, and consulting, Darren is looking forward to adding real value to every project that Systematiq undertakes within the rail sector.

“As Systematiq’s business development manager, I look to collaborate with organisations that share Systematiq’s goals and standards. My aim is to nurture and work on the relationships we have and offer our wider set of capabilities to both our existing and new clients.

The key to success for me is repeatable, sustainable growth of customers, projects, and resources. I am always looking to identify opportunities, deploy our capabilities and skillsets to our customer’s advantage, and to build the right relationships. Through the work we do, my objective is to show our customers that we are reliable, professional, and focused to deliver on what we promise.”
